About the Artist
For Oudry’s purposes, the dog world encompasses all aspects of the dog in society, either as pets, beasts of burden, working dogs, sporting dogs or as pure-bred show dogs.
The main category that Oudry finds to depict the dog, one which by its nature is more generic – that of the pet portrait. While pure-bred dog fanciers may have celebrated the finer points of their breed, the owner of a beloved pet is interested in having a lasting portrayal of their friend. The pet dog might also be a pure-bred, but in the pet portrait the intention is to depict the dog more casually in a domestic environment. The pet portrait typically portrays the animal in activities such as resting, sleeping, begging or performing tricks.
Oudry studied classical painting and has always been inspired by great artists who were dog painters such as Antione Watteau, Francois Boucher and Fragonard. Their paintings could be light and frivolous as well as monumental and serious. The Chinese painter, Wang adopted the name Oudry, from the unparralleled animal painter Jean-Baptiste Oudry.
